This rare white timber is known in Europe as Scottish Plane, Great maple and Sycamore Plane and is indigineous to Europe and Western Asia.  It reaches a height of 100 feet tall and a diameter of 5 feet around.  The timber has a fine even texture and is used for making furniture and cabinets, veneers and musical instruments. The timber can be worked well with hand and machine tools and compares favorably to North American Hard White Maple.
